Title of presentation: ‘Implementing the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in Overseas Territories.’
WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is the first global public health treaty. The UK is highly compliant with the FCTC, but compliance is mixed among Overseas Territories. Public Health England is providing assistance through a four year project to improve compliance. The support programme focusses on three time bound priorities in Articles 8, 11 and 13 of the FCTC:
- Smokefree public places
- Regulations on packaging and labelling of tobacco products
- A ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship
This presentation outlines early successes, challenges and learning for developing tobacco control measures.
