“Island Health Indicators and Realistic Solutions to Environmental Problems”

The main themes of this years Forum will be “Public Health and Health Promotion Indicators for an Island Population” and “Realistic Solutions to the Environmental Problems of Small Islands”. Both themes assume that small isolated communities – whether literally islands or not – need practical local solutions to Information and Environmental issues where they cannot afford the investment in or equipment possible where there is a much larger population base.

Afternoon Session

“Public Health Data sets and their usefulness for small populations” (Dr. David Jeffs, Director of Public Health, Guernsey)
Ten Minute Presentations:

“Born, Lived and Died on a Island” (Dr Anita Sims – Deputy Director, South East Public Health, Observatory, Oxford).
“How to Count Childhood Accidents in Guernsey – a Long Story” (Mrs Yvonne Le Page- Health Promotion Manager, Guernsey).
“A Unique Model of Joint Inter-Island Working” (Mr John Griffiths – Managing Director, Foursight).
Evening Entertainment “Nautical Jaunt” (A Blue Badge Guide tour of Jersey’s Harbour and its history with Hugh Gill, followed by a “One Pot Supper” at the St Helier Yacht Club).

Keynote Speech: “The Environment and Health – The Big Picture” (Prof Jan Pentreath, University of Reading, recently Chief Scientist at the Environment Agency).
“The New WHO Guidelines for Recreational Waters” (Prof David Kay, Professor of Health and the Environment, University of Wales, Aberystwyth)

“An Air Quality Strategy for Jersey” (Alan Irving – Environmental Health Officer, Public Health Services, States of Jersey)
“Environmentally Sound Waste Management-The Challenges Facing a Small Island Community” (Melanie Fairfax – Water Resources Officer, Environment and Planning, States of Jersey).
“Waste Regulation” (Simon Welch, Waste Regulation Officer, States of Guernsey)
“Recycling – Hearts and Minds” (John Rive – Recycling Officer, Public Services, Jersey).
“Water Catchment Management on the Island of Jersey” (Debbie Rowlands – Water Resources Officer, Jersey).

The desalination plant and water quality
Groundwater pollution with fire-fighting foams
Jersey geology and radon protection
The problems of large scale composting
Conference Dinner at the Pomme D’Or Hotel with Grace in Jerriase and a brief talk on the History of Medicine in Jersey by Mr Peter Le Rossignol.

Friday 24th October

“Agreeing a way forwards on Public Health and Health Promotion Indicators”.

Keynote speech: “Environmental Health 2012 – A Key Partner in delivering the Health Agenda” (Ian Gray, Specialist Advisor to the Health Development Agency).
“Sustainability Indicators or Sustainability” (Andrew Bimle – Strategic Adviser on Economics & Research, Jersey)
“Strengthening the Infrastructure for and the Co-ordination of Health Protection” (Elizabeth Haworth – Consultant Epidemiologist)
“Orkney Islands Food Road show- A Community Planning Partnership Initiative” ( Val Cameron – Principal Environmental Health Officer, Orkney Islands Council)
Workshops on Public Health and Health Promotion Indicators (led by Drs. David Jeffs, Paul Bingham and Ian MacLean).
