Title of Presentation: ‘Tracking the Tiger’
In 2016 Gibraltar was alerted by Public Health England that the Asian Tiger Mosquito had been detected in nearby Spanish coastal cities. Following a visit and training by Public Health England and Vectornet a trapping and surveillance program was initiated to find this mosquito. The monitoring program continued for a year and a half until an unexpected call was received in August 2017 of a possible sighting. This came from an area that was not being monitored. This was confirmed to be Aedes albopictus, a new species for Gibraltar, with mixed emotions. A change in surveillance strategy was required and then the spread of the invasive species over half the territory could be tracked and controlled.
