Title of Presentation: ‘The Critical Role of Public Health Leadership in Optimising Health Services Delivery in a Caribbean United Kingdom Overseas Territory (UKOT): The Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) Experience (2007-2017) ‘
The TCI, a Caribbean, tourism-dependent UKOT, recognized public health/epidemiological leadership as linchpin of the inextricable link of public health to optimising national productivity and prosperity. TCI embarked upon strengthening/developing disease surveillance, reporting and response systems and spearheading health research to identify disease risk factors; set preventive healthcare targets; inform policy decisions and promote evidence-based practice. Additionally, development of a shared vision and pathways to actualize a sustainable, culturally appropriate, patient-centred health services delivery model led by the Health Ministry and supported by the National Health Insurance Program, stakeholders and partners, have contributed to progress in crafting a TCI Model.
