Title of Presentation: Bourdieu and island public health
Public Health (PH) reform is occurring in Scotland with creation of a national body and PH priorities, with implications for island PH. Pierre Bourdieu, a late 20th C philosopher and sociologist, provides a framework for understanding practice and change analysis using key concepts of habitus, field and capital. The habitus for island and national PH agents is arguably different but with areas of commonality. Symbolic and cultural capital of health protection and island PH is challenged. A Bourdieusian lens enables review of the fields in which these areas are valued, potentially providing opportunities for enhanced resilience and new practice.
